When Old Biff Tannen travels to the past to give his younger self the Grays Sports Almanac, he opens a lethal Pandoras Box that drastically changes the course. At least in the first film, they kept the sucky timeline down to the opening 20 - 25 mins or so. This is confusing and a little alienating to the audience. So, in other words, the movie spends two out of three acts in sucky timelines that eventually never transpire. Its weird to have a character in crappy old-age makeup when we dont see him in the past - except we do see Terry in the past. It's not until the third movie that we see that this future has now been erased (Marty didn't get into the drag race, and wasn't hit by the train, and therefore never injured his hand). Everything else is written outwards from there, so at least it's a coherent movie, unlike some sequels I could name (Highlander 2, I'm looking at you.) It cleverly subverts and flips the message of the first movie - that your actions do matter, and by doing the right thing, you change the course of history for the better - and examines the flipside of that, that you can also make things much worse.
